My Special Rug

My sister Miriam put together a rug, and when she finished and made it into a pillow, I ended up really wanting to make one myself.  My mother and I went to Michaels, which  is a special store that sells crafts, and I picked out a picture of a horse.  We also bought a blue latch hook which is used to attach the pieces of yarn to the canvas. Inside the kit there are four rolls of yarn, a canvas, and a color key. The color key tells you what color yarn to to use. The color key contains a symbol which stands for a specific color. For example, when I see a circle, that means I need to use light gold yarn, and when I see a triangle, then I use green yarn.

The colors needed to complete the picture are different shades of white, gold, brown, blue, and green. To make the rug, I used the hook to put a piece of yarn through a hole in the canvas. Then I wrapped the yarn yarn around the hook and pulled it through.I repeated these steps over and over again until the rug was finished and I had a picture of a horse. Once the rug was completed,  I went over to my grandmother's house and she taught me how to sew it together into a pillow. That night, I slept with my nice and fuzzy pillow.

  1. Dear Sarah,

Congratulations on your achievement! It takes a lot of perseverance to complete a project like that! Well done!

I like how you took photos along the way to chart the progress. That was quite helpful to those who have never done a rug.

When I was little, I liked to embroider. One Christmas I got a red and white embroidery basket. Inside it had colorful embroidery thread, a metal embroidery frame to hold the embroidered cloth tight, a thimble, some needles, and some projects to complete. One project was to embroider flowers on a pair of pillow cases. My Grandma Smillie had crocheted beautiful edges to the cases. I finished those and used them for years!

I also started making an embroidered pillow. Sadly, I never finished it. It is still in my embroidery box all these decades later! Maybe someday I'll finish it!

    What is your next project?

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you so much for leaving me such a lovely comment. I appreciate all of the long and wonderful comments you always leave on my blog.

When I go over to my grandma's house, she always lets me sew something new. The last time I went, she showed me how to sew all kinds of buttons to a piece of fabric.

For my birthday, I got another rug, which I am working on, and a rainbow loom. The rug is much bigger than the other, and will probably take me a long time to finish. On the rainbow loom, I've already made a few bracelets such as the fishtail and the star burst.

    From your former student,
    Sarah

  3. Dear Sarah,
I really like that you like to make some craft projects, in the future you could use your skills.
When I attended grade school ( long time ego) we had a class twice a week and we learned to knit, sew and other crafts and now sometimes I use this. I will try to teach you many different crafts just sometimes it's hard to find time, you are a very busy young lady.
    Love you,
    Grandma Tanya

  4. Sarah,
I love your pillow! You did such a great job! Your blog post reminds me of your mom--I remember your mom doing the same exact project when she was little. Unlike you, I am not as crafty. I can sew buttons back on though! Can you?
    Love you,
    Auntie Elana

  6. Hello Sarah,
This year my students are going crazy making friendship bracelets and other types of crafts that use the same skills. Several of my students have added pictures of their work (for example Juliette Online) just like you did. It really makes the blog come alive!
