My First Level 6 Gymnastics Meet

Last weekend, I had a gymnastics competition. It was my first competition as a level six. My highest scores were on floor (9.050), and vault (8.900).  Floor is my favorite event. The hardest part on floor is sticking all of the landings. The judges give deductions for not sticking the landings. During my routine, I didn't stick my front tuck but I stuck everything else. In past competition, I always received the highest scores on floor because it is my best event.

I also like vault. Vault is almost the same as floor because you also have to stick the landing at the end and you need to run fast so you can get some power. This time, I took a small step after my vault and received a deduction. My favorite thing about vault is flying off the vault. It is very thrilling.

Bars is my hardest event. The hardest thing about bars is the fly away. A fly away is when you swing three times and on the third time you let go of the bar and flip. It is scary because it is really high off of the high bar. After you let go of the bar and flipped, you need to stick the landing. If you don't,  it is a big deduction.  I stuck it perfectly. The hardest part with bars is connecting each element. That is something I still need to work on.

Beam was the event that I always struggled with, but last year, I got my highest score on beam which was a 9.525. I didn't do as well on this meet and received a 8.825. On this meet, I wobbled a little bit, but I didn't fall. On the beam, you have to do a back walkover. My back walkover is hard because it is hard to get your hands on the beam. I also have a full turn in my routine which is hard to do. The final element in my routine is a dismount. My dismount is a forward handstand that I have to hold for 1 second, turn and do a side handstand for 2 seconds and then a final turn off of the beam. Maybe next meet I won't be so wobbly, and I will get a higher score.

Here is a video of my gymnastics competition.

Have you ever participated in a competition?

What kind?

  1. Dear Sarah,

Bravo! I loved this post and watching you at your gymnastic meet. You did so well. I have to admit I cannot get over how fast you need to run to do your vault. I do believe you when you say that you feel like you are flying and I can imagine just how exciting that would feel.

How long have your been doing gymnastics Sarah?
    Have you ever hurt yourself?

I just love watching gymnastics it is a skill which requires a great deal of strength and balance all which I don't have, but how wonderful to see that you have.

I used to do a bit of competitive running when I was younger but about the only time I run is when our dog loves to chase me around the back yard.

You are a very talented young girl and I know your parents would so proud of you.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful post with us all I just loved it.

    From your pal,
    AA :)

Thank you so much for taking your time and leaving me a lovely comment! I really appreciate all the time you put into your comments that you do on my blog!

I have been doing gymnastics for two years and this is my third. I am really looking forward to my next level six meet that is on March 18th.

I have sprained my fingers many times but none of them were from gymnastics. They were all from playing tennis. A couple times on the beam I have scratched my leg on the back walkover, but it doesn't really hurt. I hope you visit my blog again and continue to leave me some lovely comments!

      Sincerely,
      Sarah

    Dear Sarah,

You are an amazing gymnast! Your floor routine was excellent. It seems like you weigh only 5 lbs. because you glide through the air so effortlessly! Congratulations on moving to Level 6!

  7. Dear Sarah,

I enjoyed reading your blog post and watching your video. I have a blog, also! To get there, go to http://taylord8.edublogs.org/. I liked the video because you did impressive jumps and flips. You also did dramatic hand motions. It reminded me of how much you must've practiced. I hope to see a comment from you on my blog! I can't wait to see your next post!

  8. Dear Sarah,

That was amazing! Nobody in my family could do that!

I have only participated in a competition once that I could think of. In 2011, There was a chess tournament in the chess enrichment class that I took. At the end of every chess term, there is always a tournament to see who can get the highest. You start off on pawn island. Then you go to knight's court; then rook's castle. Finally, you go to king's corner. I came in third in that tournament.

My favorite part of your tournament was the first part. I liked how you were doing all those flips.

Why were you wearing those dresses?

    Sincerely,
    Royce

      Dear Royce,

Thank you so much for leaving me such a lovely comment. On that chess tournament you did great. I'me not so good at chess but my mom is very good. When my sister and my mom play I would always pick to be on my mom's team because she is so good at it.

They are not called dresses they are leotards. We always wear them for practice. For competition, we have a special leotard with rhinestones to make us shine. Everybody on our team has to wear the same special leotard.

      Sincerely,
      Sarah

  11. Dear Sarah,

Wow! You are an exceptional gymnast!

Abbey has been in a competition before. On Memorial Day weekend, I went to a difficult soccer tournament by the beach. Sadly, we lost two games that we played. The first team was outstanding and beat us seven to zero. The second game the score was one to two. :(

Grace has been in a Hula Hoop contest at a city fair. I won second place. Hooray! Also, Grace has been in a jump rope contest at the school Jog-O-Thon and won second place.

How long have you been doing gymnastics?
How long have you been preparing for this competition?

    Sincerely,
    Abbey and Grace

Thank you so much for spending your time to leave me such a lovely comment! It's too bad you didn't win that soccer tournament, Abbey. You both seem like you guys are very athletic. How many jumps did you jump at the jog-a-thon?

I have been doing gymnastics for about 4 years. We prepare for competition in the summer, and compete in the winter.

    Dear Sarah,

Great gymnastic skills, we liked your video with all of those moves. We felt like you when we did the bars at a mall here in Bangkok called Emporium. We spanned around on the bars and we felt scared because we might fall.

  19. Dear Sarah,
I think you are better than me at gymnastics because floor is hard for me and you think it's easy, so your sooooo wonderful!!! I wish I could do better than that.

I also know that you're better than me because I quit at level five and miss the level four competition.

I also remember in the blog you said you want to do better next time. On the beam you could put two hands on top to balance and you wouldn't fall down.

Do you mind if I ask two questions?

Do you like gymnastics? Do you have any friends in gymnastics?

    From,
    Kippei
