Today we left Southern California to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It is approximately a 600 mile drive and will take us 12 hours. We are making this trip in an RV. RV stands for recreational vehicle which is basically a house that stands on wheels. We are in a RV that is 32 feet. It is big enough for all seven of us to live and sleep in. We each took sleeping bags instead of bedding. The RV also has an electric generator so we can have light and plug in all our appliances like refrigerator, oven, and tea kettle, as well as our computers. My dad’s cell phone gives us internet access. Under the bed there is an area that holds 80 gallons of water. This gives us water for the sink, bathroom, and shower.
We brought the RV a day before our trip to our home so that we can fill it with all the things we need for our trip. My dad bought numerous supplies such as food, water, plates and utensils for eating and cooking. We also took things to do like books, math, sewing, and flash cards for music theory. Each person packed one bag of clothes and of course a camera to take photos.

One thing that surprised me the most is that it is pretty bumpy to ride in an RV. As soon as we started to drive everything that wasn't tied down started to fall and move around. After a while, we got used to it and it wasn't so bad.
Have you every gone on a long road trip?
Where?

ReplyDeleteDear Sarah,
How exciting to be out on the open road in an RV! I love road trips, and I look forward to hearing about your adventures!
Yes, I have gone on many long trips in my life. In fact, about three years ago Mr. Yollis and I went to the Grand Canyon! We took our SUV, so we did not have as much room as you have. Seeing the Grand Canyon was simply breathtaking! You read about it and see pictures, but standing at the rim looking over that beautiful canyon is quite an experience.
We did a lot of hiking around and even went on a walk with one of the National Park Rangers. One night the park has a special event. There was an area where some astronomers (people who study space) brought their telescopes and let people look at the stars and planets. I saw Saturn through one telescope!
I doubt you'll have time, but we also visited Bryce National Park and Zion National Park while we were out. We were gone about two weeks!
I wonder what kind of plants and animals you will discover!
Happy Trails!
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
P.S. Does your RV have Internet access? :-)

Dear Mrs. Yollis,
DeleteThank you so much for leaving me a lovely comment. Wherever we have phone access we have internet access, even in our RV. I wrote this post while we were driving.
We are also planning to go to the Bryce and Zion National Parks. I hope I like it there. My mom went there when she was little.
Last night we slept in an RV park about 2 hours from the Grand Canyon and now we are driving to the Grand Canyon. All the kids slept in one on a sleeping bag. It was really cold at night, but in the morning it became warm. My mom and dad had to sleep on the floor with a blow up mattress. I don't think she really liked sleeping on the floor.
Sincerely,
Sarah
Dear Sarah,
ReplyDeleteWow! what an awesmome trip you and your family are going on.
I wish I was a small fly and could travel with you all.
Your RV appears just perfect for your trip. I just love the fact that you are all travelling to the Grand Canyon, what an a amazing adventure for you all.
I was wondering have you seen any animals as you have been travelling?
For I remember when we went to Lorne which is called the Great Ocean road we saw a Koala way up in its tree. It was wonderful to see a Koala in its natural environment.
If and when we visit the USA the Grand Canyon and Death Valley is the two places which we want to visit the most.
Do your parents take it in turns to drive the RV?
What is so special about the Bryce and Zion National Parks?
I, hope you will write another post about your awesome adventure Sarah.
Have a safe trip.
From your pal,
AA
Dear AA,
DeleteThank you so much for leaving me a lovely comment. On this trip, we saw both of them. I hope you will visit it. It is beautiful. I will do posts on all the places we will visit on this trip. I hope you will check them out.
No, my parents do not drive the RV. The owner of the RV drove us to these places.
Sincerely,
Sarah
Dear Sarha,
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful that you are on your way to the Grand Canyon.
Your mum did mention it in the last comment she wrote on my blog.
I bet you are all having a great time. I would love to visit the Grand Canyon. It looks like a magical place to visit.
Also another favourite place that I would like to visit is Death Valley, I never forget the great post Mrs Yollis did when she went there.
Have a great time and please say hello to your Mum and Miriam from me.
From your friend,
Bianca
Dear BB,
DeleteI really appreciate all of the comments that you always leaving on my blog. The Grand Canyon is beautiful. It is so big that if you were to go all the way down, it would be an over night trip. We only went to a ridge near the bottom.
Death Valley was very windy, but it was hot also. The sand blew right in our eyes. That is what I didn't like when we went there. I hope you will visit my blog again and leave me some more lovely comments!
Sincerely,
Sarah
Aloha Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI have never taken a trip in an RV but by reading your wonderful post I felt I was both preparing for the trip and taking it with you. It must be an exciting way to travel and see the country.
I hope you and your family enjoy you vacation.
A hui hou,
Mrs. Jacobs
Dear Mrs. Jacobs,
DeleteThank you so much for leaving me a lovely comment! I liked traveling in an RV because we were able to many beautiful national parks. I hope you will visit my blog again. I will do separate posts on all the places we visit.
What was your favorite trip that you have taken?
Sincerely,
Sarah
Dear Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you are having a wonderful time visiting the canyon lands of Arizona. I have been to that part of the country a few times, and it is easily one of the most amazing places I have ever been! In fact, the first time I visited the southwest was during one of my trips driving across the country. So yes, I have been on a few long road trips!
I drove across the country twice when I was in my twenties, and each time I made sure to spend lots of time in Arizona and Utah because of the breathtaking canyons. Some of my favorite places were Canyon de Chelly (Arizona), Monument Valley (Arizona), Capitol Reef National Park (Utah), Bryce Canyon (Utah), and Zion National Park (Utah), and of course The Grand Canyon! I love the orange and red colors of the canyons, especially with the backdrop of a brilliant blue sky.
Have you seen any interesting animals? I saw that you posted a picture about Saguaro cacti on Mrs. Yollis' 366 blog. They are amazing plants! Have you seen any "teddy bear" cholla cacti? They are small and look cuddly and fuzzy because of all their spines, but they pack a nasty punch. Their spines have an irritating toxin and barbs on them, so they are hard to pull out. They have great adaptations! Maybe you'll see some rattlesnakes, gila monsters, or jackrabbits.
Enjoy the great adventure!
From,
Mr. Salsich
Dear Mr. Salsich,
DeleteThank you so much for leaving me such a lovely comment. We visited some of the parks that you did (Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Bryce Canyon), but you visited others that we did not. I also like the orange red color of the canyon, especially at Bryce Canyon. We saw a couple interesting animals like deer, squirrels, cows, bison, horses and mules. We didn't really see any cacti, but we drove by some.
I hope you visit again. I will do more posts on all the places that we visit.
Where do you want to go next? What was your favorite place that you went to? I couldn't pick a favorite, they were all so wonderful. I hope you will visit my blog again and leave me more wonderful comments!
Sincerely,
Sarah
